1 Star Great Idea! Terrible Equipment! Terrible Customer Service!
This is a great idea, and we enjoy using it when the machine is working. But good luck if the Clear Play DVD player quits working. Ours quit working less than 2 months after getting it and it took over 6 months and who knows how many phone calls to get ours replaced. We were told that the replacement player would be a new upgraded model. It looks like the same cheep one. From what I have heard from other Clear Player customers we are not the only ones who have had bad luck with customer service and getting a player that actually works.
5 Stars Used Clearplayer for 4 Years
This is the best product on the Market!!!! Never had a problem with the player and download filters. Thanks you Clearplay for giving us back our choice.
2 Stars Nice Idea, but Player Might Die On You, Filters Sometimes Don’t Load
The idea sounds wonderful. But here’s my experience:
1. I’ve had a lot of problems getting the filters to load on the player at times- sometimes it would just hang when I’d put the USB filter stik into the DVD player.
2. I really liked the DVD player for a while (it even had an optical out + component video), but…. the player itself died after about 9 months. Plugging it in now does nothing, and it has my DVD prisoner inside. Clearplay only gives a 90-day warranty, so beware! I had the “updated” model DVD player as well- CP427BUSB that’s supposed to “resolve all the problems.”
3. However, if you’re after the 90 day mark, they’ll usually offer you another “free” DVD player if you buy another year’s service though. (about the cost of the DVD player, roughly.) Given #1 above though, I decided to let dead dogs lie. You’ll have to ask yourself whether you want to take the chance that they’ll continue to be nice enough to send you new players.
I hope these guys get their act together because their business model seems like it’s really a good idea, and there’s definitely a market for this. They need to take the hit for bad merchandise and not push that off on the customer though.
5 Stars Clearplay does what it says.
I have this Clearplay dvd player and it works great. It does what it says! I just wish Clearplay would come out with a Blueray player. Or a DVD upscaler w HDMI. For HD televisions I have found the video connection seems to improve with an additional “component to hdmi converter” installed.
1 Star Good filters, disappointed in hardware
We were Clearplay “early adopters.” We purchased one of the first DVD players that loaded filters from CDs. The player worked as advertised and our family used it about once a week or so. We loved the fact that we could watch movies (and some TV shows) that we otherwise never would because of the content. After several years of light to medium use, the player began to stop playing DVDs without coaxing and finally quit altogether. We were not happy about this, but reluctantly decided to purchase another, newer machine. We were told by ClearPlay that the new DVD machine was higher quality and improved interface. We purchased the new machine in December of 2007. The first thing we noticed was that the new USB “filter stick” was DOA. In order to use the player at Christmas time, I had to contact tech support and download the new filters onto a USB stick that I provided. The machine then worked OK, but had a constant low audio buzz. However, because we liked the filtering so much, we decided to live with the product. Now, it is a year and half later and the new machine has stopped reading DVDs! Of course, the company now says that “we’re sorry, but you are past the warranty. Would you like to purchase a new machine and a 15 month subscription for $150?” A new machine would be our third due simply to poor quality. Frankly, we are not happy. This is a good concept. I hope that Clearplay improves the quality of the hardware. We can buy a cheap plain vanilla DVD player for $29.95 at retail. If the players are going to break so often, then their pricing needs to reflect that.
